Kind of both. I farmed UW for money and ectos and just kept the ones I got. I'd have to say I bought most of the ectos and shards rather than farming them.

well chest running isnt really porfitable.
try areas where hi end stuff drops, use wiki to find out where certain things drop, then chest run there.

I'd rather farm for 6 months to get the 100 billion ectos required. Then again, since Ecto prices are now falling to the ever so mighty Onyx Gemstone, it might be chepaer to just buy the Ectos. At about 3.5-4k Ea, it would be around 400k for the ecto half of the cost. The shards cost would probably be around 250k or so. (I'm doing all the math, and pulling numbers out of my ass, so please don't go nuts right?)
Hell, you could do dungeon runs, and then trade for the required Ecto/Shards out of the Onyx Gemstones. Since Oynx Gems seem to be twice the price of Ecto these days.
And if you do decide to buy, don't do it from the merchant. Buy from other players.

I'm working on a FoW set for my Dervish. Currently farmed 48 shards in about 2 weeks using solo Dervish FoW and dual HM Monk. I have 6 ectos from dual HM Monk in UW, and plenty of golds and tomes and dyes. I'm not in any rush, so I'm working my way through the shards first, then I'll probably go farm all the ectos I need using my W/Rt. Or I might farm DoA for Titan Gems and sell those, as a guy in my alliance did. FoW in a week from DoA <.<

You claim you're rich, there is a big difference.
Chest running is not profitable unless you run chests for other people and keep the decent drops?
And on-topic..
My ecto was made from trading, shards I bought from merchant. Couldn't be bothered to buy in 2 and 3's from players, and cash was never an issue.

Chest running is okay. Right now it is hard to get items off though because people are not willing to pay exagerated prices for most of the items from gwen anymore. Some of the items still have a ton of value but it is becoming more common. Also mods dont sell well because of perfect salvage kits. I actually dont even buy mods anymore because if I wanted to use a mod I would just salvage it off a item and replace it with another. The game really doesnt allow for you to go multi building where you absolutely need to have 2 weapons with some points in each discipline so no need for mods unless you are really lazy.

The thing is that lately the farming isnt that profitable anymore and if they are there always comes a nerv while the prices stay high. Players dont get their nice items sold anymore unless at low prices (saw elemental sword req 9 go for 75K and stuff like that).
But if u want a 15K armor u gotta farm 5times more/longer then in the old (good) days.
Look at the new update with splinter weapon, even the one of the 2 good farming things of R/Rt or Rt/R they fcking nerf.
This way Anet is losing lots of guys. I'm getting bored also atm cuz of the no really good farming builds and the loot scaling

To answer the value questions and chest prices: given the current price range of 1.6 to 1.8k for obsidian and 4.5k to 5k for ecto, it'll cost you 800,000 to 900,000 for the rare materials and armor, plus a small price on top of that for the common materials.
I've found that in some areas, chest running can potentially be highly profitable, if your treasure hunter and luck titles are high enough. I like Tahnnakai Temple and Turai's Procession; I've found the first has a fairly tolerable celestial drop rate, and the second has a better than average elite tome drop rate. It takes about two minutes and some change to do either run, and you usually find one to three chests that are unguarded or minimally guarded.

I had about 200K before I even thought of FoW.
I used Terra Tank to farm all 105 ecto, took little over 1 month.
I bought the shards 1.8k ea
Sold random stuff, free farm (no entry fee) to get the little rest
